Phase I - Needs Assessment
We visit our client to experience first hand the
environment, problems, and expectations. This
enables us to develop program objectives together
with the client. If additional needs assessment
work is necessary, we prepare either a client
specific questionnaire for participants, conduct
interviews, or facilitate an interactive assessment
process for the client.
We then design a workshop (series) on the basis
of the objectives and the needs assessment results.
Phase II – Workshops
"Learning through Active Experience" is what we believe in, and so we present the participants
exclusively with concrete tasks in the open, which
can be accomplished only by using head, hand,
and heart.
Reflection and evaluation after the practical
tasks result in intellectual knowledge that is
based on physical and emotional experience and
is thus firmly anchored.
We provide an encouraging physical and psychological
security framework for these experiences, as well
as theoretical and practical aids.
A typical two or three day workshop program comprises
a combination of:
- Short "ice-breakers" where participants
work in pairs or a whole group;
- 1 to 2 hour tasks where groups work in parallel
or in collaboration;
- Outdoor tasks which may be on land or in
water (e.g. rock climbing, rafting, kayaking,
trekking, camping, rappelling)
- "Low-ropes" as well as some "high-ropes"
elements (the latter are tasks that take place
approximately 30ft above the ground);
Each task is followed by a debriefing session
where the experience is reviewed, analyzed, and
related to the work environment.
We custom design all tasks to meet client's needs
and ensure that they are not just challenging,
but also safe, fun and educational.
At the end of the workshop the whole experience
is evaluated and participants develop concrete
transfer objectives for implementation at the
workplace.
Phase III - Follow-up
We strongly believe that any learning must be
carried back to the work place. As an implementation
support, we would work with the client to identify
necessary projects that can be taken up by the
participants on their return. A follow-up day
is scheduled about 2 to 3 months after the workshops.
We also suggest to the client measures that can
be taken by the organization to enhance the environment
to encourage change at the work place. These interventions
have proven to be very beneficial because it provides
a focal point for participants to get together
again and review their experiences in the work
environment. STEP’s consultants and internal
coaches provide valuable supplementary assistance.
